Créée en 2007 grâce aux financements de la Bibliothèque de l'État de Californie (California State Library) et de la Fondation Austria/Kahle, la bibliothèque ouverte (Open Library) est une initiative des Archives d'Internet Internet Archives). Elle se donne pour but de rassembler les notices bibliographiques de tous les livres publiés sur papier ou électroniquement à l’échelle mondiale. Ces notices bibliographiques complètes comprennent une description détaillée de l'ouvrage ainsi que la table des matières et indiquent à l’usager la disponibilité de l'ouvrage (téléchargement, emprunt ou achat).

Tout comme Wikipedia, ce catalogue collectif permet à tout un chacun (après inscription sur le site) de contribuer en corrigeant, ajoutant ou encore traduisant les notices et les pages du site. Lors de notre visite, en juin 2011, la bibliothèque ouverte comptait plus de 20 millions de notices de livres. Plus qu'un catalogue, la bibliothèque ouverte est un point d'accès à des millions de livres scientifiques ou profanes, imprimés ou électroniques, dans 100 langues différentes.

Ces ressources sont accessibles de plusieurs manières :

- la page d’accueil offre une sélection de livres à télécharger ou à emprunter

- la fenêtre de recherche simple ou avancée (en haut à droite de chaque page, avec limitation par format)

- le feuilletage des index sujets ou auteurs (rubriques en haut à gauche de chaque page).

La page d’accueil permet de feuilleter la sélection au moyen d’une série de vignettes (pages de couvertures). Sur certaines vignettes, une petite icône en bas à droite indique le niveau d’accessibilité du livre (téléchargeable, empruntable ou à vendre).

Les résultats de la recherche s’affichent sous forme de liste de titres parfois accompagnés d’une vignette. La notice bibliographique, plus ou moins détaillée, est accessible en cliquant sur le titre. Elle propose un agrandissement de la page de couverture de l’ouvrage, différentes indexations mot-clef, lieu de publication ou encore classification Dewey. La page offre également le nombre d’éditions disponibles et leurs détails et propose enfin si une copie est disponible de lire, d’emprunter ou d’acheter l’ouvrage.

Quant au feuilletage des index, il s’effectue là encore au moyen d’une série de vignettes. Juste en dessous de celle-ci, un graphique interactif permet de limiter la sélection par année de publication. Et en bas de page, des sujets connexes sont suggérés ainsi que d’autres limitations possibles (espace, temps, histoire, etc…) permettant à l’usager d’élargir ou de restreindre à loisir le nombre de résultats obtenus.

Les livres numériques sont accessibles en plusieurs formats dont PDF, plein texte, DAISY, ePub, etc… et également via une interface de visionnage extrêment fonctionnelle et simple d’utilisation.
