17/06/2016, Notice revised on 17/06/2016

The Islamic Lithographs digital collection originated from the physical display of sixteen Arabic lithographed books, exhibited in the McGill Islamic Studies Library (Montreal, QC, Canada) between February 1st and September 30th 2014. At the time of our visit, the digital collection included 56 titles but the goal is to digitize all of the 750 lithographed volumes in various languages held by the McGill Library. These bookes were published between the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century in a number of locations:

  • the Middle East (Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Turkey)
  • North Africa (Morocco)
  • South Asia (India, Pakistan).

Visitors can browse the collection by country of publication or language, and search the collection using search box located at the top-right corner of every page. When selecting a book, visitors are brought to a page displaying a detailed bibliographic record next to the first page of the item. To encourage proper citation, the bibliographic record includes a bilingual dynamic bibliographic citation in MLA (Modern Language Association) format, that can easily be copied/pasted.

The lithographed books can be opened by clicking on either the first page of the item or one of the icons underneath the image. The full text is accessible, either in PDF on the McGill website, or using the online reader of the Internet Archive.

Visitors interested in learning more about the history of lithography in the Middle East and South Asia will find an extensive bibliography.

The Rights page explains in great detail how to appropriately use and reproduce content from the website.

The lithographs are in Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, Persian, and Urdu, but the website is in English.
